Although incredibly simple, it is important to remember that the majority of goals at all levels of play are scored from close to the net. We define the Scoring Area as the shape drawn from the post, to the faceoff dot, to the top of the circles, and across. Although there are times when passing from within this area is the best option (somebody wide open backdoor) our philosophy is that taking a hard shot from within the scoring area is never a bad decision. Over passing in this area will cost us goals.
Additionally the scoring area is important because it marks the boundary between two different types of shot. Shots within the scoring area should be aimed at whatever part of the net is open - we are shooting to score directly. Shots from outside of the scoring area should be aimed to create a rebound, usually by shooting low off the leg pads. All of our shots benefit from screening the goalie.
Lastly, if the our goal offensively is to take shots from the high percentage area, then clearly our goal defensively is to prevent shots from this area. This is a main focus of the 2-3 Defensive Zone System.
